5 Ways to Celebrate Spring with Your Dog

Spring is sprung and after a cold winter, you and your pet might need a little relief from cabin fever. Warmer weather brings lots of opportunities for you to get back outside and enjoy the world around you!

Your dog will LOVE to get out, sniff about and take in all the spring sunshine and sights with you.

Here are a few things you and your dog can get out and do in the sunshine:

1. Take a Walk.

Walks with your dog can be a great way to get in some light cardio while allowing your pet to stimulate his or her mind with all the smells. Find a dog-friendly park or hiking trail, or simply trek down the sidewalks of your neighborhood; just make sure your pet’s collar or harness is snug and the leash is secure! Step it up a bit with a light jog or run and you’ll be blasting through energy in no time.

2. Go for a Swim.Dog enjoying kiddie pool

Many dogs enjoy interacting with water, which just so happens to be a great way to cool off and have fun! Plastic kiddie pools are great, inexpensive, don’t take up much space and give your pet an opportunity to splash about. Turn on a sprinkler or hose to see how your pooch interacts and don’t be afraid to get your bathing suit on and jump in!

3. Find Time to Play.

Tug-of-war, keep-away, fetch? Find a dog rope, tennis ball or toy and hit the backyard grass! If there is one thing dogs love to do it’s PLAY! Playing games can be enriching for your pet and also get out a lot of energy in an entertaining way. Teach your dog to fetch or just tug on the rope until you both tire out.

If your dog has a lot of excess energy or smarts, try elevating your activity by creating a backyard bootcamp.

Set up an obstacle course and train your dog to complete it. Training can also be a great way to engage your pup’s mind and keep him or her focused.

Don’t have room for an obstacle course? Just work on basic obedience commands and training such as sit, stay, come and shake!

5. Go On a Date.

Spring is patio season! Find a dog-friendly patio at a restaurant or bar and catch a cocktail or snack with your dog’s company. Many establishments with outdoor seating allow your pets to join you, but it’s always best to double check before going. Make a date night of it and stop by your pet’s favorite store to shop for toys or treats!
